  • Despite the fact this this is our family “house Madeira”, I seem never to have written a review of this. I bought 20 bottles of this back circa 2010, likely 2007/8 bottling as my best guess. We drank the entire 13th remaining bottle with our family last weekend after an inadequate 7 day decant. It was pure and beautiful. Started out with some pronounced VA but that blew off soon. Caramel, butter, walnut and brown sugar. This drank like a much older wine to good affect. I am sure this would have been even better with a month open but it was consumed rapidly over two days to universal acclaim. Glad to have 12 more left and will open another soon and let it sit a bit.

  • Rezek Society Honors Hugo (Casino Club): This was a delicate and refined Madeira showing pleasant classy elements of dried fig, roasted nuts, and perhaps a touch of orange peel. Although lighter in weight and intensity then I typically prefer, this was a delight. Rezek Society honoring Hugo.

  • CES 50th Anniversary Dinner: Opened 8 hours before drinking. Mid neck fill. Cork removed in perfect condition with waiter's corkscrew; stained about 1/3 the way up.
Aromas of milk chocolate, fig, and spice. All of these follow onto the palate, along with a searing orange-lemon acidity. Some enjoyed this wine more than others, but all now have a somewhat better understanding of how the writers of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, sustained themselves, and drew inspiration.
Have no idea how long it will last, but I do agree with Sprinter60 when s/he writes: "This should be enjoyed in small glasses with a friend who, like you, was alive in 1968 and remembers the drama and tragedy of the times. This is what aged wine should be -- an evocation of memory and a delight of present senses."

  • I thought this was good, but not great. Very high in acid and a bit funky. Not sure how long the bottle had been open, but this was definitely the last third of the bottle. Improved somewhat with more air in the glass. This showed complexity and some caramel, but honestly seems like it could benefit from more time. Revisit in 30 years?

  • Time travel in a bottle. The boal is superb. A vibrant twang of acid sharpens the flavors of island spices and brown sugar, and averts the painful sweetness old madeiras often have. This should be enjoyed in small glasses with a friend who, like you, was alive in 1968 and remembers the drama and tragedy of the the times. This is what aged wine should be -- evocation of memory and delight of present senses.
