  • Almost 3 years since my last bottle of this, the last of the 1/2 case. So wonderful to go out on a high note here. Tastes far fresher and cleaner than the last two btls despite the fact that this 1/2 case goes back almost 8 years (yes, I understand the perils of aging a natural wine such as this for so long). What I dig about this wine--today--is that it actually tastes like a nerello from Etna, but so much more. There is a great animal element to this (smoked meat, leather, underbrush, musk, the smell of fear...) that reminds me of mouvedre or tannat. But then there is that FC funk of orange crush, rhubarb, Dr Pepper, burnt sugar, etc. A bit drying on the finish.
As always, this changes so fast upon opening. Alas, a lot of its charms were fleeting after a half hour, and the sour and toxic tasting notes began to shine through. Still, great stuff and really fun. Will buy again next time they come around.

  • Took a flier on this and crapped out. Seems like a combination of corked and generally shot. With a half hour of air, a tiny bit of fruit emerged, although with a thin and unpleasant, overly tart, profile. The mid-palate is totally hollowed out and the finish is a mix of dust, cardboard, less than noble tannin and string volcanic mineral notes. Really curious ti try a sound version of these, but availability is an issue.

  • take 2. a half-case of FC wines is a lot to get through for sure. While not horribly toxic like the last one, I am not sure about the integrity of this one either. Has more of the pickled rhubarb and balsamic notes I have come to associate with the Susucaru. Drinkable, but not all that enjoyable. The charm of these wines has sort of faded for me over the years. This remains a crazy hallucinogenic carnival of a wine: house of mirrors, bearded lady, wolf boy, and the like. A bit exhausting to drink.

  • Still very much alive. As the other notes have mentioned, definitely heady and intense aromas of pine, road tar, black cherry, and sauerkraut. I feel it has become more harmonious over the years that I've been drinking this. Acidity is still ripping, tannins have declined, but this wine is certainly a volume knob turned to 11 in terms of its intensity. Lovely little spritz upon openingThe volatility will certainly turn a lot off, but it is a wild (albeit academic) experience if you keep an open mind to it.

If I drank this wine once a year, that would be good enough for me, but my year would certainly be much less interesting if I opted not to.
