  The 1955 Lagrange is something of a blunt instrument, a little roughly-hewn around the edges. There's big red and black fruit which speak to the strength of the vintage, but it's also a slightly unripe, vegetal, green peppercorn, and a little brett. The fruit comes through better on the palate and it's surprising how tannic this is! I've scored this pretty close to the excellent 1940s vintages from this estate, but it feels like this presages Lagrange's difficult era.

  Incredibly youthful color and the nose to match. Expressive youthful nose displaying concentrated black fruit, blackberry, crème de cassis, strong ash, noticeable green, licorice, iron and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, chewy and rustic, medium acidity and mineral, still showing coarse tannins, and a long youthful black fruit driven finish with ash at the end. Just like the modern Lagrange, the overall expression is very straightforward, structured and masculine. Most prefer it to the 45 Kirwan.

  Third pour in a blind flight after one mighty fine bottle and one absolute stunner, so I didn't get the chance to give it as much attention as it deserved. Didn't help that a trio of knockout Burgundies dropped while I still had some in the glass. But this was clearly the freshest and youngest showing of the lot and indeed the others in the flight turned out to be a decade and two older. It still has plenty of fruit in pitch-black tones with a variety of other interesting stuff going on as well, savory elements in the broth and mushroom zone as well as some black tea leaves.

  Decades of Decadence - x5s: Iron and blood, a light green edge, cherry and wood/cedar. The palate doesn't quite have as much interest but there is a nice core of red fruit and a little animale kick to it. Pleasantly medium bodied and holding very well.
