  • San Diego Superspeader 2021 (Solare Restaurant, Liberty Station, Point Loma, San Diego CA): 14.5% alc. Decanted. Clear dark garnet-blood red color. Beautiful mouthwatering notes of sweet-sour red cherries, violets, leather, creosote. Outstanding in every way.

  • Nose: The nose is a bit shy at first and it takes about 2+ hours to really open up. Once it opens up, it’s not so much alive as it is an experience of pure Nebbiolo aromatics of rose petals, red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, crushed rocks, loads of savory herbs, wild flowers, a touch of citrus peel, and bits of tar. There is very good depth here with an almost ethereal quality at the moment.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is in a lovely place on the feel as there is poise and a sense of being whole showing off an elegant touch to the tones of red cherries, strawberries, crushed rocks, savory herbs, wild flowers, red fruits, and tar notes.

Overall: Oh 2005 Barolo. I’ve always been a fan of elegant vintages and this is just on point right now. This only saw bottle air with me pouring off a bit before really getting into it. This can age longer, though there is zero reason not to enjoy this right now with about 2 hours of air.

  • Picked up an 8 pack of these recently and this was the first bottle I tried. Was not sure what to expect, great producer, with great fruit, but 2005 has seen very mixed reviews, more damned with faint praise if you will.

Poured this into the decanter about 30 minutes before the meal. First thing that surprised me was the color. This wine was brick red, but showed very little signs of age and also showed no orange hues I often find with older Nebbiolo. On the nose this showed a lot of Black Licorice and that beautiful rose aroma Barolo can be known for. This smelled so strongly of roses that my wife took it to the rose bush on the other side of our yard to compare. A very real grilled meat flavor and dark red fruits, cherries and even boysenberry, but the fruit was in the back ground.

On the palate the tannin is still very present with elevated acidity as well. Also has a nice mineral edge which I love. This drinks like a baby. Not the most powerful Barolo I've ever had, but could easily be one of the prettiest. Alcohol is at 14.5%. I am often very sensitive to high alcohol, but you would never know it was that high from drinking it.

So glad I have so many more, one of the most beautiful wines I've had in many years...
