  • Ridge Wine Vertical Dinner (Los Angeles, CA): I fear this one is officially past its prime. My bottle was surprising not totally busted, but still, this wine isn't really made to hold up this long. Drink it now if you've got it, and have a back up!!

  • Initially quite musty and devoid of fruit but slowly freshens up over the course of 3 hours and blossoms into a lovely nose. Cherry, currant, capsicum, curl of smoke, old leaves, antique shop, cedar chest, much like an old claret. Coffee grounds, cranberry, ample tannin and bracing acidity remain despite only a whisper of sweetness that drops out from the midpalate leaving a thinner, silky, and slightly bitter tobacco leaf finish. Not a complete wine, and one that appears to be slipping out of balance while drying out, but quite charming all the same. Delicious with lamb pie and at 11.8% I can drink all I want.

  • 1980s Ridge Jimsomare Vertical: Medium red color, lots of bricking. Leather and soy on the nose with the smallest hint of red fruit, old dusty and musty cellar scents. Light herbal, dried cherry notes. A tad tired when compared to the others, more old than anything else. A hint of sweetness in the mouth. by itself this would be a decent bottle but when compared to the others it lacks freshness and vibrancy.

  • Cork is in amazing condition. Lovely leather aroma barely concealing some cassis and cranberry with a touch of roasted meat. Long balanced palate with strong minerally acidity showing the strongest. Clean well aged Cab character with some moreleather and cassis. The bright acidity is really the star as it is prominent yet not overtly tart letting the mineral characters shine and really giving a bright lift to the finish that still includes soft tannins. A terrific find that held up perfectly over night in the fridge. Excellent.

  • With K at home at dinner (pasta). Solid medium ruby. Little sign of age. Spicy, peppery nose--more like a Zinfandel. Initially seemed thin, but broadened considerably with age to gain in concentration and zesty, peppery fruit. Pretty good medium-bodied wine. Finishes somewhat bitter. 5-10-13-5: 83/100.
