Having found the tell tale signs of seepage on a box in the cellar it became apparent that it was coming from this bottle of 1928 Poyferre and subsequently that the cork had fallen in. With the level well below the shoulder there seemed that there was little prospect that the wine had survived. In fact it was incredibly dark colour robust and alive.
The accelerated aeration had clearly taken its toll as it faded pretty quickly in the glass, but nonetheless a remarkable wine in all the circumstances, which shows what an extraordinary vintage this is.
