Decanted and aired for 2 hrs. Heavy sediment. Nose: Great 9/10. Left bank Bordeaux-like. Palate: 9/10. Full bodied. Fully balanced tannin to fruit. Smooth. Cassis, coffee, burned soil, barnyard (in the good way), dark berries. Finish: 9/10 long and mesmerizing. Price: 9/10 ($160 2023). Enjoyment: 10/10. Would buy again: Yup! Dark garnet in color with no browning. Surprisingly youthful at 20. A wow wine.

Very impressive wine and a huge surprise for me. Had expected something good but not that it would have developed so impressively over the years. It is still packed with lush black current fruit but also a lot of sweet licorice. It is dense but still has a quite refreshing acidity that balances the flavors nicely. Still a youthful wine but it tastes really good right now! The tannins are polished but still present. 95-96p

Drank side by side with the 2001 Almaviva. Both were decanted and shared over several hours. The 2003 is a wonderful wine which was drinking well (and still has several years ahead). It is a nicely balanced wine. The 2001 was superior. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium.

(VINA ALMAVIVA) COLOR-obnoxiously great pitch black, NOSE-huge aromatic, new world; TASTE-BIG WINE, tannins, thick, viscous, massive, new world fruit (dark cherry, blackberry, black currant), but Bordeaux structure. REALLY IMPRESSED, WS-95, GV-93

Stunning. Ink in color. Tabac, chocolate, soil on the palate. Drinking near perfectly.
