My WOTN in challenging company of Lafite and Mouton Rothschild 1995. Gorgeous example of how great and multidimensional a 100% Tempranillo wine can be with the right terroir and in the hands of brilliant winemakers. Incredibly pure and fresh, unveiling layer after layer of beautiful fruit, and (exotic) spices. Grows in the glass with new, ever more attractive and intense flavors with every new sniff and sip. Utterly velvety, sexy, attractive treat which will probably merit an even higher score, sometime in future decades which it will effortlessly survive.
Anniversary Dinner (Café De Klepel, Prinsenstraat 22, Amsterdam, NL): Deep and rich, spicy and balsamic, powerful, velvety, broad shoulders, firm structure, ripe fruit, eucalyptus, real depth and power, opens up beautifully in the glass, perfectly integrated tannins all wrapped in flesh, hint of eucalyptus, excellent finish. A classic beauty, drinking well now, will last for decades.
The 1995 Unico is yet another stunning success sitting in an exquisite sweet spot at the moment. It offers a seducing dense garnet core and an explosive bouquet of cassis, mint leaf, burnt tar, roasting coffee and led pencil shavings. It is full bodied yet soft as silk as it envelops the palate with delicate layers of raspberries, caramel, melted chocolate and crushed hazelnuts. The tannins have fully integrated and the oh so velvety finish lingers on for a full minute. This sublime tour de force flirts with perfection and appears set for providing hedonistic pleasure in the glass for at least another two decades. Bravo!
After an excellent Bordeaux 1995 tasting with all 1er cru + CB & Ausone, Haut Brion blanc and Yquem with many scoring very highly, a Vega Sicilia Unico and Penfolds Grange were served. I scored both 100! - a very rare score from my side; was it the great preceding tasting or just simply perfect wines or both? Vega was chocolate, sweet blueberry and just everything right
Medium-deep garnet with pretty flashes of ruby on swirling. 12 hours slow air in open bottle. Tightly wound nose of mineral and dark fruits. More expressive on the palate, loads of sweet red fruit, juicy acidity and smooth tannins. There is an ever present faint fuminess of alcohol but no unpleasant heat on the palate, and this displays the usual Único velvet mouthfeel. Youthful in its fruit and structure, but a bit of tertiary soy and straw creep in through the finish. Drink now or hold.

(VEGA SICILIA UNICO) #4; VaynerPAZZZ (based on QPR); COLOR-great rounded red; NOSE-very grainy (barley soup, corn stalks), Grapenuts, hint of Balsamic vinegar; TASTE-some really intriguing Sherry-type flavors, caramel-butterscotch on the finish, medium bodied, great dark flavors that mellow quickly (blueberries transforming into strawberries), really nice wine, polished and elegant, but a little light & shallow for me (like meeting the Queen, but she has no depth to her conversation); JM-97; GV-91
