  • Intense yellow, almost orange. The nose is utterly complex, with exotic aromas of pineapple, pear and petrol. The mouth displays near perfect balance, with plenty of yellow fruits on the entry, good acidity and freshness, with excellent mid palate density ending in a long and chiselled finish. A 20 years of age, this is a stunning wine, youthful and fresh. No oxidation at all -despite other unfortunate drinkers below. At stunning and powerful Savennieres, which has the potential to rival the best Batard Montrachet out there. It can be drunk now, or kept for many years. A stunner !

I will always remember this old french man who told me many many years ago Savenniere and Jasnieres could rival in warm vintages the very best white wines from Brugundy, in a different style for sure...this bottle definitely proved his point.

  • The two most recent notes below describe it quite well. Deep golden. Sec, for sure. we got some initial suggestions of oxidation, but that blew off. Savory, with suggestions of apple cider. On the second day, gassed overnight, oxidation became more prominent, to the point where my wife gave up. On the third night, when I finished the rest, it had become substantially more intellectually interesting than friendly. (Claude, thanks for sharing.)

  • After much thought I decided this would be a good match for Matzoh Ball Soup. Color was appropriate to age, mineral, yellow fruit, and wool. It was OK, but I thought a little old, at least this bottle. The next day, leftover wine (with leftover soup) having been left open overnight, was actually better. Richer and at the same time more vibrant.

  • I had my doubts about this one after reading recent TNs, which complain of oxidation and when I opened it, the hint of this on the nose and the golden colour got me worried, but there was no need for concern. It just needed a few minutes in the glass to dispel the doubts and deliver a great selection of aromas, ranging from deep honey to bright apple, with slightly dessicated peach and orange peel. The attack was rich, but not cloyingly so, beginning with apple and peach, a strong hint of lemon, before moving into a cool, long taste of honey and a substantial taste of butterscotch with a cool, crisp, chalky finish. Immensely satisfying on its own, this would have been even better with an old goat cheese.

I wasn't keen on this wine in its youth - I found it tarty and lacking in nobility, but it has aged really well. I've never had any oxidised bottles but there is clearly some bottle variation.
