  • Detailed cool spice, very peppery, green pepper I’d attribute to the youth. Hoisin and Asian five spice. So much more delicate and nuanced than the ‘02 La Tâche two nights ago which I loved. Elegant and cerebral aromatics. Big projection and very expressive, maybe even more so than other experiences I’ve had with RC, in a massive Burgundy bowl and it leaps from the glass. Endlessly complex already and can be examined and enjoyed from myriad angles. Every bit the mythic masterpiece this vineyard is reputed to be. Although there is certainly some DRC signature on this, which again I think is pronounced because this is a relatively young wine, it is always amazing how unlike anything else in the DRC portfolio this is; much more subtle, refined. A stunning experience.

  • Complex and ethereal with a beautiful perfume of rose petals, freshly grated ginger, pomegranate, cherry and sandalwood. It is cool and elegant in the mouth, with great finesse and a lacy texture. Flavours titillate, and nothing dominates. It is calm and engaging, with excellent presence and an airy feel. It has terrific persistence.

  • Classic Romanée-Conti nose, something that takes awhile to appreciate how stunningly brilliant it is. The attack on the palate is simply awe-inspiring. Simply complete - a magic combination of richness with austerity - Aubert has referred to a "green" note to RC, which most people think is a bad thing but with RC it is amazing. Refined but savage, light yet intense. Compared to the La Tache 2002 served alongside, it was notably better most particularly in its refinement. A real treat - thank you Frank!

  • 2002 Romanee-Conti is outstanding, mild-blowin' scent. I never feel happy with this wine as I can recall 2 times of 1990. Tonight it comes across everything, subtle, special scent of all beautiful fragrant intermixed. Splendid texture with the spicy finish, RC Trademark, very long lasting aftertaste that overwhelms all of my senses.

  • From magnum this was absolutely splendid. It had the most ethereal, elegant and complex nose one could wish for. It smelled of raspberries, cherries, rose petals and pomegranate. There were beautiful spicy notes and plenty of mineral. In the mouth it is so fine, lacy and delicate yet the palate is filled by a sensual, voluminous savoury liquid. It is a seamless sphere of fruit and spice that engages the senses. The La Tache and Richeboug next to it are very good wines. This was a couple of clear notches up.

(Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti) The nose is rounder still than La Tâche, matching the width and depth but with extra high-tones at the top. Another wine whose nose strangely reduces in amplitude when swirled. Versus both the LT and the Richebourg there are less fireworks and a less obvious ‘look at me’ personality. This wine is tighter but does still have the edge in density. There’s no extra burst, but that tiny gap between the mid-palate and the finish is filled with more ‘command’ than any other wine into a spellbinding finish. Today, and in these glasses the overall experience is a notch below both the Richebourg and the LT but (directly comparing) well above the RSV. For the future there is extra promise but I really think I will need multiple bottles of each for further research ?

(DRC Romanee Conti) Wow. This was way more open than the La Tâche on the nose. Just an exotic spice bazaar with lots of perfume, flowers, cherries, blackberries, tar, leather, exotic herbal things. So much going on. Usually this is much shyer at this stage but today was really singing aromatically. Up there with the Richebourg and RSV as the red noses of the day. The palate was ripe, dense, spherical and had profund elegance. You get lost in your own mouth with RC in it. Like spider silk just caressing your palate with alot of density. Much bigger than the '01 or '00 RC. And wonderful concentration. This was great because it had more weight and breadth than the two eralier vintages but still had that uncanny elegance that is the trademark of the wine. Stunning. Will live a very very long time. One to get in large format
