Pergole Torte Vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Zalto Universal and Burgundy Tasted blind. Clear, useful deep ruby-garnet color. Very fine, harmonious nose with lots of red fruit. High, ripe acidity, high, fine tannin that still needs time. Beautiful concentrated red fruit, very balanced, very fresh and reductive. Long and fruity finish. This wine needs 10+ years. 94++ We guessed this as Pergole 19 and were so amazed to see that it was actually 2004 and was even better than the 2004 Pergole. Such a surprise, such an amazing wine in the making!

Drank last nite for xmas eve at the Pollacks. Dark ruby red core, no age apparent. Generous nose of black cherries, tobacco and tar. Medium to full body, still with a solid mix of black and red berry fruit, good concentration, woodsy elements and spice. I noticed a good amount of sour cherries, with notes of tobacco, espresso and some tar. Excellent length with forest floor notes on the back end/finish. Tannins are light to moderate, and mostly non-intrusive. Lovely wine that has matured nicely.

I bought a mess of these wines back in the day (before Martino Manetti sadly decided to go all racist-uncle online). This is aging finely. Ripe cherry fruit, iron, and fine-grained tannins, good acidity and some developing bottle bouquet. Plenty left in the tank. Plenty of class and brio (to the wine, at least).

A blend of Sangioveto (90%) and Canaiolo (10%), aged for 24 months in large oak botti casks. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.
Somewhat translucent and slightly evolved blackish cherry red color with a subtly pomegranate hue. Fragrant, somewhat evolved and relatively Nebbiolo-ish nose with aromas of leather, sour cherries, some licorice, a little bit of tobacco, light savory woody tones and evolved hints of sweeter raisiny fruit and wizened dark berries. The wine is lively, sinewy and moderately full-bodied on the palate with flavors of black cherries, some sanguine notes of iron, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light notes of old leather, a hint of savory wood spice and a touch of poach tobacco. The overall feel is enjoyably firm and structured, thanks to the rather high acidity and still moderately grippy tannins. The finish is lively, rather grippy and long with a suave, layered aftertaste of ripe dark berries, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of old leather, light notes of tobacco, a hint of fresh red fruit and a subtle, Nebbiolo-ish touch of tar.
A wonderful, pleasantly evolved yet still very fresh and vibrant Sangiovese. I was immediately guessing Nebbiolo because of the sour cherry tones, firm tannic backbone and nuances of tar, but while I got the Italian red part right, I was otherwise off quite a bit. However, I estimated the wine to be approximately 15 years old (guessing 2006 vintage), so I wasn't that far off age-wise! All in all, somewhat in the ballpark, but still way off. Nevertheless, this is a lovely wine that is in a lovely spot now, but at the same time showing great potential for future development. Can be drunk now, but most likely will continue to improve for many years - perhaps even decades - more. Very lovely, recommended.

Absolutely in a prime drinking window: this ensemble is in peak form -in tune, in sync, and a thing of beauty. Decanted 45 minutes, right out of the bottle, a seductive, powerful nose - think burning embers (no smoke, no sense of heat, just the crackle of energy). In the mouth, a kaleidoscope of flavors - tart, lively, a touch of earth, a touch of fire, a touch of roasted spice. I have another bottle, too... whoopee!
