a very dark core with brownish/tawny rim indicating age and foreshadowing a gorgeous profile of brown sugar, spice, tobacco dust, worcestershire sauce, celery salt, caramel, leather and soil tones that show appropriate sweetness, elegance and seduction! The palate, is smooth at first with well-integrated tannin, supple and rounded and shows a bit of antique furniture scents/flavors on the finish. Quite classic! What is it about this vintage that always is so compelling!?!?!? 93-94

From a pretty nice looking bottle with a 4 cm fill, this wine had a deep red center and orange rims. The medium intensity nose displayed boysenberries, brown spices, and soil. It also evidenced some over ripeness (or rot).
The mouth took a couple of hours to get to the right place. It was ripe with light rounded tannin and some length.
Overall, this a nice mature wine with some noticeable flaws. My guess is that even pristinely stored bottles should be consumed.

very dark, with great spice on the nose. Much more youthful in appearance and taste than expected for a 40 year old botle of wine. I did not get any of the excrement that the other two did and everyone at the table really enjoyed this. And as surprising, it lasted for several hours with falling off too much. great floral and red fruits, with spice. very nice surprise. this is the first of 12 '71's this year to celebrate and this one will be tough to top.

Shared with Xavier94 yesterday - soil-inflected, autumnal and savory. His note hits all the right buttons. Exactly my style of old burgundy!
