Fairly typical aged champagne, with a fair bit of bread, yeast, and rich autolytic notes. With time, there are some caramel and brown notes that emerge, but there is also a background vein of acidity that livens things up. That said, this is in its last throes of drinkability for my palate.

From magnum. THIS WAS AMAZING! Still very delightful fizzy with developed nutty and marzipan notes. Some brioche was still present but the coffee has subsided to the dried out coffee grinds left in the cup. So delicious and alive. Really a great surprise!

Rioja Night (Chicago, IL): I liked this more than most. A deep golden collar and bold, oxidative styling. Darker citrus notes compete a bit with the autolytic flavors. Mature.

Rioja dinner at Phil's (Chicago, IL): The nose when this was opened was all classic Pol Roger -- autolytic and tons of biscuit and dough. The palate was also brilliant, with lots of sweet fruit with those doughy notes at first, but time was not kind to the wine in the glass: the palate thinned out more and more. Drink up, while there's still something worthy.
