  • Flawed - clearly reading the notes there is a lot of bottle variation and this was a bad one. I have had the bottle for many years, stored well, but it tasted old, tired, and baked. Demoted to cooking wine.

  • ESTG Northern Rhône: Cracked pepper, cherry, super young, juicy. It has none of the flaws of the hot 2003 vintage but also seems to have barely evolved at this point.

  • Superb wine offering depth and strong primary, secondary and tertiary flavours. 1 hr decant. Excellent with venison.

  • The last of a multi-bottle lot purchased a few years ago from K&L Auctions. Even accounting for 2003 being a hot vintage this has me scratching my head. Both who drank this would have called it a warm vintage Southern Rhone Grenache-dominant wine, not a NoRo Syrah. Still, it's very good in the plummy, baking dark fruits with a touch of spice kind of way. It's just not what you'd want in a Hermitage. Smooth and easy, very ripe, not cloying, but rich. Drink up.

After a little buying spree a few years ago at K&L Auctions, I've concluded that though there are some good buys there, it seems more like a dumping ground for collectors looking to trim cellars of wines that haven't worked out. This was sold as "Provenance: Wine purchased on release from reputable sources and stored in the temperature controlled wine cellar of a Paso Robles Winery.".

There is a label slapped on the back that shows that it was imported by Premier Cru (Emeryville, CA). A "reputable source"? No, that was most definitely not a reputable source.
