Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Intronization (Aquavit): Definite contender for WOTN. When you try these with this much age you realize that we really need to keep our hands off of even the 90s. They just get so much better. Fruit still firmly there but also have the more secondary notes and just so very pretty.

"The mind is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Chicago, IL): Pretty clear that La Mouline was showing better of this little flight. The nose had a bit of volatility, and while the fruit was more present and primary here, the palate had started becoming a bit thin and showing a lot of high-toned notes. More interesting than good at this point, alas.

Held my breath a bit when opening this but the cork came out smoothly and in one piece and it was clear that the gods were smiling on us. This was simply brilliant. A beautiful clear color, red at the center fading to brown at the rim. The nose was complex and savory, with notes of leather, nutmeg and Christmas cake and it held together beautifully on the palate, with mature sweet red fruits, savory herbal / nutty notes, good acidity and a decent if not overly long finish.
A good portion of this hobby, particularly when holding older bottles, involves disappointment when they don’t live up to our hopes. How nice then to open something that doesn’t just meet expectations but goes way beyond and provides a great experience. An encouraging omen, hopefully, on the first day of a new year.
Good for educational purposes for me. I have 2 others and wonder if there will be bottle variability and the others will be more pleasant. This particular bottle had more acid than fruit. I didn't decant long at all. I feel the fruit has faded and this n=1 experience represents a wine that is past its prime.

Charcoal notes. Sweet, rich and open.
