Our first Ridge (courtesy of Grapes, White Plains) (Landmarc): Pretty sure my pour was the last of the bottle as it had quite a bit of sediment in it so that might end up impacting my view. For many at the table this was their number 2 of the Monte Bello's but I'm not sure I didn't prefer the 2012. Interesting year where there was rain in October and harvest went into November. Wine had almost a hint of funk to it when paired with the cheese. Still a fair amount of tannins. There was this odd almost washer fluid like presence which I'm guessing might have been caused by the glass it was served in. Not necessarily offputting, just different.
Rich dark sweet blackberries and sage spice. Smooth and creamy dense texture with enough structure to keep it well balanced. This bottle was quite good, but just a bit more advanced then I would expect as fruit was just slightly muted.
Cork in perfect condition. No "seep" up the sides at all. Base was black as ink. Wine color was lighter than that, but still a very dark ruby red. Very, very slight bricking around the edges. Initial nose of vanilla, cocoa and chocolate. Straight out of the bottle, the first glass was definitely more open than prior bottle 3 years ago. Palate still lots of tannin, but with very nice structure and mouthfeel. A bit more forward palate than expected. Mouthcoating with a long palate. 2nd glass really started to show lots of dark berry fruit, like a fruit cobbler with carmalized sugar on top. Blueberry, blackberry, coffee on the nose and palate.
vanilla, oxidised and, I think, a slight corked note is beginning to come through. I've had this tapped via Coravin since New Years Eve. Not sure if that has had any effect. Some cherry, berry and blackcurrant, spice. it's juicy, fresh but a bit tired and meh for me. Finishes a little sour and bitter. Hmm.
