Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): The first baroli we’ve had with any age this trip (we had this and the ‘98 back to back). These are definitely moving into the more secondary style of wine although the fruit still there (seems to be a bit darker.- more black fruits). Heading to the winery so will be interesting to compare the aged versions with the younger one. There is a certain depth that seems to come from the wine having more time. Certainly darker in color as well. I have been thinking 20-30 years is the sweet spot for many barolos although this seemed to suggest the 20 was about right (I suspect more time and the fruit would have faded entirely). As it was though drinking well now.

Decanted for 3 hours. Opaque coppery garnet color. Nose of deep black cherry, balsam, tar, high-pitched rose petal, camphor. Layers of ringing dark plum, sweet tar, and textured earth on the palate. Bright acidity and broad-based, dusty tannin leading to a long finish of plum, earthy structure, and grip. Excellent wine but still on this side of peaking.

Beautiful wine. Not a light on the feet package but full of sweet fruit and tannins with a long finish.
