Big, powerhouse wine. on the nose it started with ripe black fruit but with time showed more leather/smoke/bacon. mid is rich but very well balanced. savory tannins. Ripe but never heavy. perhaps a touch of alc on the nose but very slight. Impressive balance stood out the most to me - especially for a hot year.
Opened and decanted. Cork was good but wine tasted flawed. Poured back into the bottle and corked it. Got another and it was great right out of the bottle. Brought both to a CdP tasting and served the second bottle. Toward the end of the evening, we checked out the bottle I thought flawed and it was singing beautifully. Not up to the other bottle, but 93-94 ain't hardly flawed. (The other would be 96-97)
In the bouquet beautiful herbs and spices and ripe fruits. On the palate ripe fruits as well, good acidity and round tannin with still a soft bite. The wine is completely ready now, but there is absolutely no hurry. Around 2020 this will still be a great pleasure.
In a really great place. It did not drink to me like a typical Pegau Reserve. It taste a lot younger then the 13 years it's been waiting but without the tannins and acid. Nice fruit, long silky finish. Had it with hamburger and it sat really well with the food. Very little alcohol for what I would've expected from this 2003. I say decanter for an hour and enjoy. I would drink this sooner then later. I don't know where this wine would go without the tannin and acid. I've had the 2007 many times and I would almost not relate them to come from the same producer.
