Son Ryan brought this from his cellar to a family celebration dinner. This was tight and a bit closed with the fruits subdued and overtaken by a layer of black tea, tobacco leaf, with hints of creosote over the black berry fruits. This needs bold zesty bar-be-que to offset the tight firm black fruits and non-fruit layer.
This wine underperformed in my opinion. I know 2003 was a very hot vintage but the wine was almost an Amarone style wine. Deep, very hot, very grape-y, chewy, brooding wine. You could almost taste the texture of the grape skins in this wine. While other 2003 Pegau's were wonderful, this one wasn't as pleasing as I'd hoped. Opened for 30 minutes before drinking then after 1 hour after tasting it started to mellow out and take it's full stride.
Totally magic in a bottle. This profound 2003 Pégaü Cuvée Réservée displays abundant classical Grenache fruit. Kirsch, raspberry, blackberry and sun warm strawberries emerges with some time in the glass. The wine is perfectly mature but still has many years to go in the cellar. The nose in this bottle is as clean as all other 2003s I have tasted. After some time in the glass cinnamon, Asian spice box and tea leaves reveal themselves. The palate is lovely. It is perfectly integrated with a lovely acidity, velvety tannins and a length on the finish which goes on forever. Without a doubt, this is a profound wine with awesome complexity, elegance and power. (score is 98+)
