Nose of black raspberry, leather, hints of bret, sage, and anise. On the palate, raspberry, leather, smoked meat, melted licorice and herbs. Nice finish. This one showed a hint of bret but not enough to overwhelm. Drink over the next few years. I don't think it gets better than this for this wine.
Having drank all 6 bottles I bought from Premier Cru, I was given 3 more bottles by a generous fellow wineberserker who strongly disliked it. I was curious to try it, as I've wondered if there was bottle/lot variation at Pegau. Getting some confirmed "bad" bottles from someone may help me understand.
Slow o'd for a couple hours and served to a group of 6. This wine was consistent with my previous experiences. There is funk here, and quite a bit. It is of the barnyard variety, not clean funk, but I've had dirtier funk than this. This bottle also seems more advanced, with some nice secondary components showing up - forest floor, olive, smoke, tar, earth. The fruit is mostly red, dark cherry and plum. I swear there is a cola flavor mixed in with the fruit. Tannins are surprisingly mild as well. This improved throughout the evening. But the next day, the funk had increased to a significant level while a lot of the secondary characteristics have disappeared. I’m drinking the last sips of it now, and I still enjoy it, but it was considerably better yesterday.
As for the rest of the tasters, 3 people declared it completely undrinkable, 1 other person liked it quite a bit, and 1 person was indifferent. Several disparanging comments were issued toward Pegau and this wine particularly. One gentleman was extremely vocal about his disdain for the wine, how he couldn't drink it because it was so poopy. This gentlemen does like CDP in general, and I do not dismiss his opinion. However, I personally think he affected some of the other drinkers present with his adamant discontent. I saw this behavior in reverse at a CDP tasting I organized a while back, where a “leader” in the group of 12 people extolled the virtues of the 2008 Pegau. At that tasting, everyone seemed to like the wine as a convincing expert explained its goodness. This time, with the loudest voice in the room being very very critical, most people disliked it.
Overall, I’m grateful for being given the wine, grateful to confirm that I like Pegau in all it’s funky goodness, and very grateful to see the polarizing opinions towards the same bottle of it.
Overly bretty and heavy spritz from secondary fermentation that didn't improve after 24 hrs. Worst bottle so far. With the cost of averaging-out the bad bottles this ended up being a pretty poor value.
