Honey Butter Fried Chicken, Champagne, and some blinds (Chicago, IL): Served blind from half bottle. Sweet balsamic vinegar on the nose, as well as some juicy black fruit. The palate had dates and figs, and was obviously quite ripe, though the tannins seemed to have decided to hang out by encrusting the bottle rather than stay in the wine itself. Moderately sweet, this brought to mind a thinner version of the red SQN straw wines, but really, I couldn't pick out any more than that. 80% zinfandel, 20% petite syrah.

Sort of a summer-weight ruby port. Fill the bottom of the neck in a 375 ml format, no bricking. Zin fruit with a mild weight. Not too alcoholic or tannic. Nice, and a little interesting for being off the beaten path. Serve with bbq in a sweet sauce, fruit-glazed smoked gamebirds, or a mild blue cheese such as Jasper Hills' Bayley-Hazen.
