Golden, plenty of mousse filling the glass, full of apple, grapefruit, white flowers, rounded with great length and still crisp acids. Approaching a still wine with limited fizz. At peak for my taste, doubt it will improve from further cellaring

blind First I thought Krug 1996 (with a reluctant Krug perfume) but it was too elegant. Starting to get some tea biscuit notes, no nougat yet. Brilliant acidity, not too sharp. Far away from his peak. 97-98

not blind Close to a perfect champagne. At least 10-15 years ahead even if you like it fresh. Minimal nougat note that could give a hint for the house. Cracking 1996 acidity. Refreshing, elegant. 99-100

An Afternoon of French and French-Inspired California Wines (Healdsburg, California): Deep yellow with an orange tint. Few remaining bubbles. A touch of apple cider and sherry on the nose. Off dry, relatively full body. Complex caramel, vanilla, and orchard fruit backed by a tremendous finish of brisk acidity and stone. Much fresher than the aromas suggested and enlivened by the 1996 structure. A great aged Champagne.

Explosive mouthfeel, with discreet effervescence. The volume of this wine is prodigious, and it is at its peak, there is little point in waiting for the 1996 from now on in my opinion unless you like the mushroom aromas. Here we have a wine full of nuances despite its formidable energy which stretches the juice like a javelin, with aromas of sweet almonds, spices, candied fruits and dried flowers. The acidity is laser-cut, with a greater dosage than what we have seen in Champagne for several years, but this gives a nice foundation to the wine. Great finish, slightly oxidative on hazelnut with a kilometric length.
Great Cristal.

Floral nose, then nougat and honey.
