  • Majestic golden colour in the glass, tremendously rich bouquet of honeysuckle and toffee. There is definite melon fruit on the front palate with a melted butter complexity towards the back, remarkably the wine still has great structure with the acid keeping the complex secondary flavours in balance.

  • Good complexity on the nose - toasty oak, marmalade, oranges, honey and grapefruit. Palate has good depth, but there is a note of tartness on the finish just disrupting the line slightly. Sits in between the two bottles I have had previously, one better and one worse.

  • Such amazing complexity on the nose - honey, caramel, butterscotch, marmalade, mixed nuts, lemon sherbet and toasted spicy oak. The palate is outstandingly deep, balanced and lively, with a powerful, creamy, layered mouth-feel and a long vein of acid holding it all together along the superb length of the wine.

A bit of bottle variation has been reported from the case purchased at auction earlier this year by some members of the buying syndicate. My first bottle was good, but this bottle displayed better freshness and was a small step up on the previous bottle. Still, I still think that it is sliding away very slowly and would have been unforgettable at its peak rather than "merely" excellent now.

  • My first bottle from the recent case bought from auction by some Sydney gamblers who felt lucky. This bottle's level was about 2.5cm below the capsule.

A golden yellow core with hints of straw yellow and green around the edges. Toffee apple, honey and a touch of pineapple, along with a gentle hint of sweetness provide an interesting bouquet. A delightful creamy mouthfeel. Superb balance from start to finish on the layered palate, all is in harmony. Excellent length that goes on and on.

There is no doubt that it is fading and that it is well and truly time to deplete remaining bottles. It would have been unforgettable in its prime, but given a good bottle it is holding on and is still showing enough of its past glory to be considered very good.
