  • A big night with a vertical tasting of 6 Caymus Napa Cabs.
1993 - Brown at rim, light in body, nice berry flavor, not much going on and a very shirt finish. Still nice
1997 - Color was good, medium body, more fruit and softer than the 1993.
2003 - A little better than the 1997, full body, round, nice mouth feel, good fruit flavors.
2009 - very enjoyable - full body, fruit and a touch of vanilla at the end. The end lingered for a while. Delicious.
2015 - This was the best, complex, round, drinking perfectly, good finish that lingered for a while. Nice balance of fruit and vanilla bean.
2020 - Good, less complex than the 2015, sweet fruit and vanilla. This could be better in a year. Soft mouth feel, round, delicious.

    Great night!

  • I have a few of these left. Decided to try this with roast chicken on thanksgiving even though I usually go Southern Rhone for this occasion. American holiday, decided on a US wine and I am not a big Pinot fan so went with this knowing family likes this kind of wine. Opened and decanted well in advance. Considered but did not use Durand which wound up being a mistake as the cork snapped with a standard corkscrew. So, the bottom third of the cork was lost into the bottle. Immediately double decanted with filter. Modest amount of sediment, mostly coarse. No flaws noted.

Dark purple color in the glass, looks like a very young cab. Aroma perfect but reserved at first. Needed time to open up for sure but was drinkable pretty much right away. A few hours later it was best towards the end of dinner when things really started to unfurl. Still had a sip with pumpkin pie and it was amazingly good with it! Smoke, blackberry jam aroma. Flavor a bit overly dark fruit-forward at first but then setlled in and became a bit more complex. Endless pleasant finish with good grip but no tannic bite. Wonderful mouthfeel. This wine if well stored likely has a long life ahead. This was one of the best showings for it but I think I should save the last couple of these for a while. Certainly a crowd pleaser but doesn't hit the highest points on my scale as it isn't my preferred style of wine, just doesn't have the complexity of old world stuff. But it is great. Let's say 92 for now. Recommend a long decant at this stage, at least 2 hours and probably longer would be even better. There has been bottle variation in what I have but this bottle was in perfect condition in spite of my cork mistake.

  • on point, really good on all fronts. Soft tannins, good fruit, long Caymus finish.

  • Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2 plus hours. Had this at the Ranch; my dad simply loved it (97 for him). Cassis, juicy plum, and purple fruits with purple flowers, cedar, earth, pepper on the nose. The palate is inky, dense palate saturating black and purple fruits, nice purity to the cassis and blackberry, graphite, anise, vanilla, and a velvety texture with a pepperey finish. This seemed to get sweeter and riper the longer in glass and the blacberry compote notes took over getting so it became more over the top where I did not really have those thoughts on first pouring. Repours brought this back to where its earlier moments were much brighter and contained. Not a great pairing with our steak by the time we got there. Personally, I would just pop these and drink unless you want to gravitate it more to a port style. 92+ to 93pts at peak.

  • Wow! Still awesome all these years (in wine fridge) and was the best completely amazing Caymus Cab since I opened the 2008 about 3 months ago!
These wines in your cellar are jewels!
Can’t wait till the next one! 2010?
