90 pts

  • This was really excellent. Expressive and rich with good depth and complexity. Cocoa, blackberry, and tobacco. Tannins were soft, but this still likely has a year or two more at peak. I wouldn't let it go for too much longer.

  • Bright and glossy ruby. A little reserved on the nose initially but quickly opens up to a very tobacco and dark cherry bouquet, very Paulliac and powerful. Impressive start. On the palate it is incredibly poised and creamy and full of pure glycerin rich fruit. A little closed on the mid-palate still but opens up fabulously well towards the end. Very long and consistent and satisfying. Still some medium/fine tannic structure noticeable but wonderful acidic balance and freshness. Really impressive and outperformed the vintage. I would say this is lovely to drink now for a wine at the very start of its primary drinking window. If you can find it for $60/bt or thereabouts then it is s very good buy indeed.

  • Ruby opaque colour, nose of blackcurrant, vanilla, some licorice. Very smooth attack, subtle fruit and strong vanilla sweetness. Hardly any minerals but some oak and licorice. Medium length. A bit disappointed by the lack of complexity. Nice but not more.

  • 2 hour decant. Dark fruit on the nose with hints of chocolate, flint and gravel. Some tobacco notes?? Tight knit on the palate - medium to full bodied. Freshness, with fine tannins still holding things together. Very pleasant sweet finish. I think this is starting to open up now.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Not very expressive on the nose, but work with it and we get dense rather compact fruit, fresh and minerally, but rather tight and linear. The palate has a lot of good substance, lovely texture, and there is a good cut of acidity running through it as well. There are ripe tannins, grainy, and the palate is substantial, with well integrated tannins, but there is little in the way of expression. It is closed down right now, so difficult to judge, but there is a lot to admire here, and a lot of potential I think. Grainy tannins in the finish.

(Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac) Overdelivering for its rank and vintage, this is a stunning wine that rivals the more highly rated 2005. It will easily keep for a decade or more, but is enormously enjoyable now, with richly concentrated cassis and cedar flavors and a supple, integrated structure.

(Château Pontet-Canet) Cassis, blueberry nose; plush cassis, plum palate with good acidity; medium finish

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) Rather closed on the nose; I get some sense of a deeply fruited wine as I work it in the glass, but each time it quickly recedes into its shell. Firmly structured, with an exuberant wealth of ripe velvety tannin. Almost purely creamy, yet fresh and balanced with a very correct acidity. Lovely composure. Although there is little flavour in this wines closed down state, this still has great impact. Pontet-Canet continues to turn out wines to match almost any in this commune.

(Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac) A dark, glossy wine, with a bright purple rim. Lovely character on the nose, vibrant, dark, sweet and concentrated black fruits. Very full and pleasing palate, showing great style, with well delineated and attractive fruit. Moderate acidity, and rather firm, slightly austere tannins showing on the endpalate and length finish. There is sufficient fruit in this rather expressive wine to cope with these tannins in the long run, I think. Has potential.
