Across all 6 magnums of 79 Trotanoy in an owc tonight, they were not consistent in terms of quality. The best bottle still had richness and vibrancywith good fruit. I can imagine the wine is off peak in 750ml format.

I'm more of a left bank guy, but there are a few right bankers that really do it for me, and Trotanoy is one of those. This is not at the level of the magnificent '75, or even the excellent '78, but it is still quite good. Really excels on the nose, which is laden with earthy damson plum, and doesn't quite deliver on the palate, which is a bit more lean and rustic. Quite honestly, I favor this style over some of today's bruisers, and without the massive structure, one can appreciate the nuance of flavors this delivers, with notes of tobacco, red plum and forest floor.

Excellent from start to finish, the ‘79 Trotanoy shows a complex, mellow, classically-Pomerol nose of dried plum, truffle, smoke, pencil, and a hint of chocolate. Most of the stuffing has gone, if it were ever there, leaving an attractively svelte profile. If not profound or rich in the mold of the 1970, certainly delectable and aromatically classic.

Wine Spectator 40th Anniversary; 10/21/2021-10/23/2021 (Marriott Marquis): Surprising how good this was. From a magnum. We decanted for sediment in the morning and rebottled and then brought to dinner that evening. It was great. Darker fruits and round notes and very expressive wine. Will have to continue to keep an eye out since there aren't so many great wines from 79.

Tasted blind. Lovely tertiary aromas here, clearly aged Bordeaux. The palate is a bit rustic and light for a Pomerol. A good but not great Trotanoy.
