Michael decided to blind us by putting a glass from 750ml, next to one from Magnum. Both distinctly different, borh very good. The 750 was more advanced, with some baked apple and brulee notes. It was rich and powerful and deep and long. The acid of the vintage cut like a vinous knife. The Magnum was much less evolved and more precise. There was some toastiness on the nose and a real skinsy, chewy phenolic feel to the back-end.

Boxing Day wines at Domaine: My first time with an Egly of this age. Fizz is subtle. Fruit is evolved and shows lots of earthen and mushroom complexity. Intriguing in the style but prefer my Champagne more fresh and effervescent.

Color/App: moderately deep yellow with light mousse and copious tiny bubbles. Showstopper bouquet of yeast and bread dough, baked apple pie and marzipan. Full bodied, quite round with perfect acidity and a very long, fine finish. Loved the nuttiness. Really what all Champagne houses should aspire to.

Dinner out in Jersey with some friends: Love me some good aged champagne and this was right there. It's perhaps a bit more evolved than you'd expect for a 96. Lots of caramel and roundness but still with the bubbles that kindof bite through. Enjoyed.

Lovely champagne. Disgorgement date of July 2004. On the lees for 85 months. Golden amber. Lots of apples. Still quite lively but clearly in its secondary phase. Would recommend to drink up. Shared by SW
