  Wow. From a magnum and this wine was rocking. It took about 2 hours to get fully there and it was great on the pop n.pour also. Slight brickin at the edge. Nicely aromatic. A slight green astringency that made it extra interesting. Still a full bodied wine with lingering tannin. Some liked it best with food. It held strong against some strong competition like Hundred Acre and Davis Phase V.

  Vinetasters: Loire red (Wilmette, IL): Served double blind. Dried dates and figs, with a raisinated quality that in a lineup of cabernet franc had me thinking that this may well have been an Alzero. Clearly a wine made in a vastly different style from the others, though in hindsight this wasn't a modernist Napa wine but rather some dessert-style red wine. My 1st, group's 7th.

  I loved the penetrating aromatics and floral, blueberry, and menthol notes of the deep ruby/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Franc. The blend is actually 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. The flamboyant fragrance jumps from the glass of this sweetheart of a wine. There is tremendous concentration and intensity of flavor, yet the wine is light on its feet, with a surreal, ethereal flavor profile. Cabernet Franc can do some special things in California, and it is good to see this wine perform so well. Already drinkable, it should last for 10-15 years.
  
  Readers who love the Bob Foley style of wines, and there seem to be many who do, should also know that he produces wines under his own name, and is also the winemaker for Switchback Ridge and Hourglass, two other up-and-coming estates.

  Surprised this is still good. Strong nose of blueberry and ripe palate of succulent dark cherry. Long finish.

  Vinetasters: Cabernet Franc (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Tastes like expensive oak, vanilla, black cherry, and all that sort of stuff. Sweet and bitter, with ripe and raisinated flavours. At this point in the tasting, we knew this was a cabernet franc theme, and there are no discernible cabernet franc flavours here. Another in the long line of a dime a dozen wines from Napa that are completely fungible. My 3rd, group's 3rd.
