(Columbia Crest H3 Merlot Horse Heaven Hills) An aromatically subdued wine with a medley of oak spices, bittersweet chocolate, and dark raspberries. The palate has chalky tannins and subdued fruit flavors. 96% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Malbec. Aged 18 months in French and American oak (33% new). 14.5% alcohol. 64,000 cases produced. Sample provided by winery.

Deep ruby red in the glass. Great intensity of aromas here - loads of black fruit, oak spice, leather and some jammy red fruit. Dry with high tannins and an acid that highlights the fruit nicely. Everything is in balance here. The wine shows solid depth and a well-knit structure, but could use a bit of length. Nonetheless, a beautiful effort. Drink or keep.

Lots of fruit flavors though not jammy or even fruit forward. Finishes very nicely with earth, toast and just a hint of spice. Moderately tannic.
