Incredible showing for this wine. Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Beautiful nose, beautiful flavor profile (dark cherries, cinnamon, currant, mineral, forest), great depth, beautiful mouth feel, and a long finish. A tremendous wine on all accounts. So fresh, excellent structure. Still at peak. Doesn't need much breathing time....it's definitely good to go right now. Should be at a similar peak for at least a year, it may degrade slightly over next 3-4. Drink by 2020 for best results.
Previously sampled via CV and in a perfect place right now. Should be consumed within 2-3 years at most, but this is the epitome of what a well-aged and well-built calcab can become. Along with '99 Dunn Howell from magnum, best wine at Rose's 50th celebration.
Westchester Wine School - Premium Wine Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS tasting. Crimson red in color, showing some bricking. Lots of funk on the nose, which I found off-putting. I hadn't had this wine in awhile, and it's definitely on the downward trend. Some dark fruit still there, chocolate and forest floor too, along with a decent acidity level. Tannins mostly resolved. I recall this wine being a powerful, lush but well-balanced pour. Now, it seemed a bit tired and faded. I didn't love it, though several at our tasting very much enjoyed it. I still have some in the cellar so will have to revisit soon, hoping this bottle was just slightly tainted.
