  • At Il Mondo Vecchio in Madison with Bob M, celebrating his retirement. Bob brought this one, drank after/next to an 85 Ch Margaux. Paired with a lamb osso buocco - perfect combination for these wines. Splash decanted for 30 minutes.

    Color was a dark maroon, no signs of age. Nose was black fruits, along with a cedar/floral signature. Palate is lush and rich, dark fruits, blackberry, cassis, savory/meats. Sweet tannins, rich mouthfeel. Finish of 20+ seconds.

    Still very young, drinks well now but will likely improve. Will e interesting to see this wine evolve, given the core/mid palate it will keep getting better. Longer decant would have helped.

  • A bit more quiet than 2 years ago, now you can actually start picking out the grapes on the nose. The 35% Merlot is clearly discernible, but there are not much green cab or lead/pencil shavings. It is all about dark fruit and sweet tannins. Not very typical Bordeaux, but good with food.

  • Wines that Rock (Craig & Nita's Place): Very dark purple/red color. PNP with a couple of hours of slow-O time. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This was outstanding and drinking in a wonderful already. I would have expected this to need much more air, but no, it was open and beautiful. The nose offers up an intense aroma of sweet intense cassis with a dense layer of blackberry right behind that, graphite, cedar and a floral burst as well. The palate is steeped in this succulent and spellbinding core of layered pure black fruits; cassis, blackberry, kir, graphite, cedar, hints of savory and a long intense finish. Young, vibrant and lush, but restrained and alluring. I'm thrilled to see where this is at and where I think it will go over the next 10 years. 95(+)pts.

  • Like stepping into a cedar closet filled with cigars, #2 pencils, and cassis, this is the definition of classic Bordeaux. Paired with lamb after a 6 hour decant from magnum, this astounded with dark fruit and perfect balance from start to long - very long -finish. As per so many researched recommendations, the lamb paired perfectly with a bit of game to match the burliness in the glass. Still has time to spare, but with appropriate preparation is ready to elevate your evening right now.

    (CHAT LEOVILLE POYFERRE) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-classic bell pepper, V8 juice, black cassis, black currant, musty (like an attic); TASTE-incredibly silky on the attack through the finish, this is a polished Old World wine w/ beautiful extracted New World fruit (hot 2003 vintage), perfect balance & harmony, extremely good, black currant & cassis, red cherries, beautiful raspberries, secondary layers of smoked tobacco, really ripe candied flavors on the finish, smooth as a wine gets, this is Ultimate Bordeaux; RP-98; GV-97+

    (Chateau Léoville-Poyferré St Julien) Dark, exotic fruit nose. Damsons, with a hint of blackcurrant. Ripe, balanced, seamless structure. It has a gentle elegance, with creamy fruit and a peppery edge. Really gentle, fine tannins and correct acidity. This is very good indeed. Certainly the equal of Léoville Barton, if not slightly ahead.
