Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Iron and rust with some oxidation here. High acidity, but there is also a thinness that feels like this is getting closer to vinegar than wine. Seems a bit tired, and the tannic structure is lacking. Browned fruit with notes of figs. My 6th, group's 9th.

100% cabernet sauvignon, 12% alcohol. Bricking, not opaque, a little lighter in color than I expected. On opening, a bit of funk and rather earthy aromas, which largely blew off over time in the decanter. Leather, mushroom, truffles, damp soil. On the palate, black and red cherries, silky tannins, balanced, light, complex. After several hours, picking up some port-wine flavors. Beautiful wine, not too long on the finish. A real treat to have this 40 year old wine. Drank over two nights; it was slightly better on the first night.

Dinner at R&Y: Similar mid garnet colour profile to the 70/73 Rioja alongside. When revealed this feels quite advanced for its age. Some mellow spice, gentle fruit. Starting to creak, but there's some interest here. (*)**

Chicago Wine Flock...Jim is Playin' Those Wine Games ("Chateau La Grange" - La Grange IL): Double blind in what turned out to be a mostly Old World Cabernet flight. Fully mature and elegantly charming. Red and black cherry with earth and mushroom, along with licorice and dried herb hints. Very well balanced, good+ length.
