  • this was found when i knocked over a forgotten pile in the cellar. The weather had just turned cool and it was a no brainer to pop this. Amazement followed. Limpid purple hue with initially some earth and sulfur that blew off leaving notes of bluish fruits and camphor. the palate was complete and round and full with generous fruit and long finish. There is no hint of alcohol (despite 15% on label)

i drank a ton of these when young and the clove spice us gone but the wine us so much more complete and deliciously balanced

  • Still quite enjoyable. I always thought this was a weaker year compared to 01, 07 and 08, and age has not changed that. Dark fruit dominates the nose, on the palate, this wine is all overripe fruit, almost like a jammy Zinfandel, with a good measure of black pepper thrown in. I don't expect it to get better.

  • Dark, dark purple and bright nose of tart black and blueberries with a rounded sense of ripe dark plums with an edge of spice. Great and resolved fruit grip that had several layers of personality and a great finish...blew away the 02 Novy Rosella's that was opened earlier in the evening. Day and night.

  • Have to agree with everyone that gave this high marks. Very balanced and delineated for a big fruit wine. Loads of pepper, blue and black fruits, and bloody mocha. Soft yet focused palate with dusty tannins and light acidity. Will make a point of holding these for a few years from now on.

  • My last bottle and boy was this one terrific. It really took 2 days for this wine to resolve and show itself. On the first night, it reminded me of the 2002 Novy Rosella's, with that big funky nose and pepper--kind of brutish. However, last night over dinner in Santa Barbara, I finished it off and boy was it delicious. Little pepper, leather, talc and lovely berry notes on the nose. The palate was drinking os so smooth with inky blackberry, teriyaki, chocolate and a hint of caramel, with a nice bit of acid still on the finish. If you have one of these around, pull the cork and enjoy--the best Garys' from Novy I have had to date.
