  • The cork held up well, testament to its 30-year tenure. Using the Durand, it uncorked easily. It showed a medium garnet colour that aligns with its age. I let it breathe for about two hours before the first taste, skipping the decanter (but would recommend in order to remove sediment). A red fruit-forward aroma hits the nose first, prominently featuring cherry cola and vanilla. On the palate, it started out with a quick burst of ripe fruit that transitioned swiftly into a savoury mid-palate, echoing notes of leather and a nutty character that lingered. The once sturdy tannins have softened, but there's a surprising amount of fruit that's managed to stay fresh, revealing that this wine still has life in it. It's a typical older wine that needs time to open up, so it's best to taste it in intervals to really capture its essence. It's time to start enjoying this bottle.

  • PnP. ABV 14%.

This bottle was hiding somewhere until today, didn’t even know I had this wine. Dark olives, wet earth, and tobaccos on the nose. Fine tannins and good acidity but finished with a bit of heat, such a shame. Tannins mostly resolved. Rich, ripe, and just a tad over-extracted. Good length and complexity. Need foods to accompany this wine, maybe a Whopper with cheese? Reached plateau and should last for a while. Wine like this is great for a few sips and maybe a glass max, but hard to drink anything more than that.

  • The wine certainly displayed brettanomycnes of the 'horse stable' variety however whilst preference would be to see this wine without this component (as in the 1994 which it was tasted against which was fantastic), it was still a rather appealing mature wine with primary characters of berry, cassis and cedar. Tannins fine and well integrated. Drink now. Won't improve however should hold for a few more years.
