  • Bob’s cellar. Oily golden yellow. Nose of candied lemon rind and honey hits you, supported by a lime zest. Very pure and fresh although dampened by age. There’s back sense of tartness on the first taste, distant, you can tell it’s aged and there is still a zip about it. With more air the layer of lemon and lime zip becomes more distinct. The sweetness is far away in this one. Feels like it’s barely moved in 20 years.

  • Since my last note last year, I have been opening up bottles of this Steingarten more frequently, as I think that they are at their peak. Generally, they have been very satisfying, though a couple have been less precise than expected - leaving me wondering if those particular bottles were in a state of decline.

Anyway, I had a bottle in January this year which was very intense. The slightly golden tinged full yellow suggested maturity. The nose had the expected acacia and lime, but also a hint of anchovy paste and the sort of ripeness which suggests obvious sweetness in the mouth. But of course, the mouth didn't show any obvious sweetness at all. Instead, it was very pungent, with a lot of energy, despite a lean frame, and was very good plus. A bottle (nr. 01633) a couple of days ago poured a wine which was lightish yellow, with an arguable green tinge, and which had the classic acacia nose and a bit of that anchovy paste bursting out of the glass straight away. Again, on the lean side, but sinewy, precise, and with considerable salinity present at the middle and lasting till the finish. Later, the salinity was subsumed by pungent greenish citrus. No deterioration on the 3rd day from a half-bottle. This better example looked and tasted more primary than any of the bottles opened since my last note and was between very good plus and fine. Some bottles, like this last one, might go on for a good while yet, but with bottle variation now evident, I'm inclined to continue to open my remaining stock of 2003 Steingarten at this recently increased rate of frequency.

  • This is still drinking well 19 years on, but if you still have any, drink them up now - I can't see it improving with any more time in the cellar. Always great to drink an old bottle of riesling that has cellared so well!
