Tannins fully resolved, but still feeling a bit of heat as the alcohol is on the high side. loaded with black fruit, with hints of tar and coffee. Got a unique funk to it, is it Cayuse funk? i've not had many widowmaker before.
Initially unimpressed. No Cayuse funk and very one dimensional. But nose had funk. Drank over next several days and it improved remarkably. First the funk arrived along with tannins then both quietened down and delicious black fruit became prominent. Nice nose and finished. Medium becoming full bodied over the several days of drinking. We were very pleased in the end.
This was a good solid wine, nothing overly amazing. It had more of the softness of a rich merlot rather than a typical cab profile. Not as complex as I was hoping. The tannins were pretty subdued; there was some acidity. The wine was much better with food. In fact we were drinking it with the 2011 Horsepower Tribe Syrah, which was amazing on its own (definitely a cousin to Bionic Frog), but the Horsepower was shut down a bit by the food. Maybe the Widowmaker needs more time (it was opened 2 hours before serving, and decanted at that two hour mark and drunk over the next 2-3 hours.) Nose of slight blueberry, brambly, even a bit of rotting garbage/fruit (as Jason said, in a good way,to which I agreed). The palate also had that slight blueberry, but not lots of complexity or depth. Solid, not amazing.
