96/01/08/13/14 Vertical. The least pleasurable of the five vintages. The nose eventually showed interesting mature Gevrey aromas though it was never as intense or pleasing as the 1996. Palate had some similarities with the 2008, but less refinement and balance.

Cloudy Brick colour. Nose of quite earthy and animal very well integrated. Entry and mouth are delicate and complex, burnt cherry skins is the best description I can come up with. Finish is long and toasty and complex, coffee, underbrush. Not the tastiest bottle I have had but points for complexity and interest.

3/3, excellent cork. Pale/medium garnet core, wide pale garnet/mahogany rim. Nose is developed with smoke, game, spice, touch of red fruit. Medium bodied, quite broad and rich, gamey, smoky, spicy but with a red-fruited heart still, soil, lovely vibrant acidity, good length slightly grippy finish. Lovely, mature Gevrey, drinking beautifully but no need for any particular hurry. Excellent.

The bottles from my case of this have always been a bit restrained, but tonight this was so downright dull that I put it aside and opened something else. Returning to it a couple of hours later, it had got way deeper, almost overripe, but much more interesting.

(Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combe aux Moines) Medium-plus cherry red. Red fruit nose with well integrated background oak. Stronger tannin than the 'Les Goulots' with good acidity and fruit. Very good.

Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combes aux Moines Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): In 14/13/08/01/96 vertical. Same black fruit with plenty of earth and just the most faint spice notes. Ever-so-slightly drying on finish. More earth emerged with more air. Not nearly as good vs last time tasted in 2017, hopefully this was an off bottle.
