Syrah at Cabotte (Cabotte): Something a bit weird (not bad!) on the nose… I ended up settling on cloves but I’m still not certain. Linear acidity; surprisingly youthful fruit profile. Can’t shake the impression that this tastes just a little bit generic - which is such an unfair criticism (generic 20 year old Cornas? yes please!) - but it is what it is.

Drunk for dinner with mushroom and asparagus risotto. 13%. Deep garnet - no bricking at the rim. Black olive tapenade, sweaty leather and earth floor evolving with air into notes of morello cherry and blackcurrants. Tannins completely softened, velvety texture, soft acidity and wonderful balance - perfect harmony between all the elements. Great length and persistence with nice evolution. A really great wine in a great place at the moment. Benefitted from some air - likely to last for another decade.

Monday Funday (Hawksmoor Air Street): Started off a little muted, especially when compared to the other wines at the table. As it got the chance to get some air, however, it became - close to majestic. Blood and iron, a whiff of bacon fat and campfire smoke perhaps, with that bracing core of acidity that keeps it all together. Surely ready to drink now, but will go for a long time. Lovely bottle.

Nicely rich, has a specific herb/spice streak I can't identify exactly, good acidity, still moderately tannic. Quite nice.

This bottle seemed remarkably young when decanted for several hours. Fresh, elegant, some perceptible tannin. Brambly and digeste.
