Deep crimson in color. Interesting, unusual nose that strikes me as somewhere between Barolo, Brunello, and Bordeaux. It has some of the floral cherry character of nebbiolo, the earthy sour cherry of sangiovese, and the rich, oaked black cherry and cedar of a cabernet/merlot blend. There’s something roasted and herbal about it as well, like a beef stew. Definitely smells different from anything I’ve previously encountered from Piemonte. The nebbiolo side shows strongly on the palate, with firm, powerfully dry tannins and flower-backed sour cherry leading the way. The cedary, woody character is still there, though, and if it weren’t for the color, I could see confusing this with sangiovese. There’s some smoke wafting about as well, and the finish is reassuringly stern and palate cleansing. Not too heavy despite the concentration and alcohol level (14%), but it is a masculine, somewhat brooding wine, which is still showing quite young at eight and a half years of age.
