Pulled this out at dinner party first from a mixed case scored at Total Wine. Wow did it blow everyone's socks off, it was the clear winner of the night - and one of the best wines I've had this year. Must get more...
Had higher hopes for this walla walla Bordeaux blend ... 60/30++ CS/CF and the cab franc seemed to dominate... Medium to full body with red pepper and red fruit followed by eucalyptus and sweet tobacco ... Just lacking the umph to put it over the top and hit 90pts... Good wine but a hole in the middle somewhere, lacking the big finish
@$37 not the best QPR. The fruit came across a little dry and thin (maybe too Bordeaux like, even for the vintage). The cab franc added some lift and complexity but overall it easily drinkable but unexciting. Medium finish. May age into something more interesting but for me it would still lack the richness of fruit that I look for but don't always find.
While many domestic red blends can seem rather alike, this distinctive wine is not of them. It is sure to be a crowd-pleaser; while it wasn't quite to my style, everyone else in the room seemed completely delighted with it.
And I can see some of its merits. A nice and spicy nose, perhaps in part due to the Cabernet Franc in the mix: pepper, mint, and maybe even nutmeg? In the mouth it did a good job of balancing potentially opposing elements; it was smooth but still lively, big but not heavy, and many-layered but integrated. Perhaps it was the easy resolution here that kept me from enjoying it more, a certain lack of tension that would have kept me coming back for another sip.
On the other hand, it is still youthful and could gain some shape and complications of the interesting sort in a few more years.
