It was one of those nights; I prepared a multi-course meal and opened up a bunch of stuff on the edge not knowing how any of them would do. All of them flopped and I found myself going back to the Shafer. After an hour, the wine revealed a smoky honeysuckle melon note. It really did take that time for a hard acrid note in the nose to dissipate. The mouth if full, with medium weight, and a finish of both melon fruit, some lemon citrus and a touch of harshness that indicates that the 1998 has peaked and is in decline. Overall a good Shafer but far from the best examples that I have had. The 1998 is on a decline, give it 30 minutes then drink up.

Almost caramel yellow. Pear and butterscotch nose. Creamy fruit but largely flat textured. Okay, but well past its prime.

Bottle is slightly corked, yet it's still big, fat with notes of pear. Even though corked, I belive the wine is in decline.
