Concentrated, medium-deep golden yellow color. Developed, almost over-mature nose with some nutty character, a little bit of smoke, light browned apple oxidation, a hint of leafy character and a touch of browned butter. The wine is medium-bodied and very high in acidity with flavors of cream, ripe yellow fruit, some green apples, a little it of nuttiness, a hint of pungent oxidation and a touch of aldehydic saline tang of a Fino Sherry. The finish is quite long and very developed with complex flavors of smoke, nuttiness, browned apple and a hint of butter.
The wine was still quite enjoyable with nice, evolved complexity, but basically everyone agreed that the wine was past its prime and had been going downhill for awhile. The wine wasn't dead and quite far from being completely goners, but the oxidation was pretty obvious here and the wine was starting to fall apart a little. This wine is still drinkable, thus I've rated it and not marked it as oxidized, but it doesn't manage to leave any lasting impression anymore. Most likely a great wine beyond its golden years is what this is. Drink up, the sooner the better.

Boy do I wish I had more of these. Closed upon opening but really began to come around in about 45 minutes. Would have been better with a 2 hour decant. No need to rush these. Many years left.

Same color as the ‘96 but even less successful. Dumb and bitter. Unattractive in every way.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 6/22/2018-6/23/2018 (Chicago, IL): Probably not entirely sound. Quite oxidized and some chemically flavours on the nose. I didn't bother drinking it.
