  • Wasn't sure what to expect now that is is 20+ yrs in the bottle, but pleasantly surprised by the fruit that remained (mulled fruit, plums), and certainly all the secondary and tertiary notes coming through. Leather, cigar, earth, etc. Very drinkable / enjoyable.

  • This is the last bottle of a three case purchase I made many moons ago. I got to share it with my cousins at a family reunion post COVID lockdown. Unfair to the wine, it was served after a bottle of the sublime Cos D'Estournel '01, which garnered 95 points. This one was stunning as well, fully melded and showing waves of tertiary flavors- just a touch less concentrated than the Cos. It gets 94 points from me. I will remember drinking this penultimate bottle, what an amazing 21 year run this vintage has had for me. I look forward to starting the next series with a few bottles of the 2017 vintage of one of my favorite wines.

  • Comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2000 Don Melchor is still enjoyable, but is likely past its plateau and in slow decline. This pristinely cellared bottle was decanted off of its heavy sediment and serially tasted over 3-4 hours. With a deep garnet robe and brick rim, it unfolds within the first hour to reveal an aromatic package of stewed plums, mulling spices, bittersweet chocolate, espresso, leather and dried earth. Full-bodied and with good acidic energy, it delivers flavors in line with the nose. The oak is nicely integrated at this point, as is the alcohol (13.5%). The wine's tannins take over on the mid-palate and are pervasive throughout the lengthy but grippy finish. If you have this in your cellar, I would recommended against procrastination with respect to popping the cork, as the tannins appear to be winning the war with the fruit. Drink now.
