  Jasper Volnay. Looked and smelled advanced, but incredibly resurrected like Lazarus and kept getting better and better over 4 hours. If it looks oxidized when poured, be patient and don't touch it. End result was enchanting toffee and caramel aromas, and very broad palate with generous fruit and richness. Top top.

  Decanted and poured immediately, consumed over two hours. Dark color; a bit closed aromatically, after twenty minutes it started showing hints of apple, pear, citrus and lots of minerals; when fully open it gave vanilla and butter and a very pleasing bite; great acid verve throughout; a big, rich wine, with intense flavors and great, great length, this is also sappy and lip-smacking even after 25 years; it finishes big and buttery, with lovely hints of residual sweetness.

  Decanted and poured immediately, drunk over 90 minutes. Deep dark color, too dark for its age, which gave us concern that the wine was oxidized, but that was not the case. Closed at first, it opened with big mineral and stone fragrances, then sweet citrus, then it settled for the duration with a spicy, buttery nose and flavors. Both the acid and the characteristic Burgundy "bite" at the back of the throat were subtle and delicious. Big, rich and complex wine with lovely residual sweetness but also firm and sappy enough to drink easily. Tremendous length. Just before finishing the butterscotch and vanilla came out. Outstanding pleasure.

Based on my Batard Montrachet experience I had expected a very expresssive nose. Nose however at first a bit closed, opened up slowly. It never became a very expressive nose, and the taste showed secondary tones, making us wonder whether this was the normal development of the wine or the start of premature oxidation? Taste was however full bodied, complex, changing in character. So much going on. Lots of balance. The most remarkable was the finish, which was complex and kept on going for ages. and changing.

  HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): This was big and powerful while remaining elegant and balanced. The nose was just gorgeous...aromas of salt water, lemons, limes, and melons were pungent and dense. This had some wiffs of sulphur too...but those blew off with time in the glass. This had some serious depth with layer after layer of lemons, flint, limes, white floral notes, and smoke. A beast.
