A bit of funky Brett on the nose initially. Still some dried red and black fruit. Fully integrated and much more fruit in the palate. Tannin is present and the finish is great. Don’t let the nose fool you, this is fantastic and ready to drink now. Will hold on for another 5+ years.

Second highest rating I've given to a bdx next to the 89 Haut Brion.
I've had this many times over the years and it has always, always delivered in the 96-98 range.
Interestingly, I had the 98 and 03 Lafite recently and this blew them both off the table.
Took about 4 hours in the decanter to reach Shangri La and 98.
Decanted, was already expressive and nice, 2 hours later took to Auberge in Napa. Started off at 94/95 points, lovely. BUT after another 2 hours in the decanter it started to strut and said fuck you to everything else on the table.
Complete orchestra. Everything was so well orchestrated together, so many moving parts, the strings, the horns, drums, opera singers, all hitting a crescendo as it built up to the climax. F'ing incredible. Even the som was gobsmacked.
It Kept moving up on points as it aired. Soooo remarkably smooth and elegant. Layered and complex. Finish that never ended. Loved loved loved the merlot which made this sing. Sandalwood, tobacco, cedarwood, pine bark, cuban cigar, leather, slight mocha, goes on and on and on. Quitessential Bordeaux. Doesn't get much better. This bottle was at tip top peak. Perfect cork and bottle fill. Been in my cellar around 25 yrs.

(Château Angélus) Mystery wine, eventually revealed as 1989 Angelus – medium red violet color; tart cherry and cassis nose with a touch of cedar; tasty, tart plush red fruit, black fruit, plum palate, with iron, mineral, good structure; medium finish (I properly guessed it as ’89 Angelus, based on the hint that it was a St. Emilion; otherwise, I might have been speculating about which older Left Bank Bordeaux it was)
(Château Angélus) Olive and fig nose; beautiful, balanced, complex, herbaceous, black fruit, pepper palate; medium-plus finish (24 mos. in barrel; 100% new oak)
