  • From Art's cellar. A little wine gambling that worked out very well indeed. This wine appears to have been made prior to the folks from Joseph Phelps obtaining the vineyard. Long double decant (2.5 hours plus) through screened funnels (cork interior disintegrated but exterior stayed glued to the neck) while awaiting a friend who never arrived. So the staff had to help me drink it. Wine was clear, a good amount of sediment. Deep crimson in the bowl, amber perimeter and a small clear halo. Upon decanting, LOTS of barnyard in the nose. Over time, it softened but a strong leather-brett scent remained all night, with aromas of red currants and toast underneath. In the mouth, the tannins had melted away but good acid kept it in fine balance. Layers of black fruit, oak, forest floor. Smooth with a long finish ending with a little bell pepper. Very enjoyable and wish I had another. Wine cost $6.79 when purchased.
