  • This is certainly on the downside but still very enjoyable, it'll likely hold like this for awhile. This was spectacular a decade ago so that is my basis here. Might have been better paired with food. Dusty notes of leather, trace of cinnamon and tobacco on the nose. The color was still incredibly inky for its age not browning at all. In the mouth, quite silky with some fruit, particularly plum on the front palate and a lingering front mouth, tip of the tongue finish. Given this was Shafer's 2nd vintage it's quite impressive. Really hard to score this as it seems to continue to improve after being open for a couple of hours, more fruit on the palate and a fuller finish. Also a bit biased as this is one wine which made me really get into wine in general.

  • Aromatically - pepper, porcelin, vegimite, faint ozone, some aldehyde, slight hay, black fruit cocktail as wine opened. On the palate currant flavors predominated, very linear palate, great acid. Very dark for its age. This wine shows some age in the aromas and less in the palate. I would not wait any longer if you have it.
