With baked Ziti, 3+ hour decant. A bottle on the downslope to my palate. Lots of smoky sherried fruit notes on the nose, with dark fruit, smoke and minerals on the palate. Still lots of zingy energy, a long tart satisfying finish, and great food friendly balance. But the flavors were a bit more 'older wine' than 'aged Barolo' to me. Expecting more.

White Truffles & Nebbiolo (Chez Nanda): Impressively youthful and bright while showing loads of layering and complexity. This can go another decade or two.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume IV (Chicago, IL): Another outstanding old bottle that showed terribly right when opened, but blossomed into something really special after a day of slow-ox. This is less ripe than the Gaja Turco served next to it, but shows more of a perfumed floral character, as well as a little more earthiness. The fruit profile here is also very clean and well-delineated, but there's also a slightly green element that adds interest.

My bottle. After noting the tea-ish color of Warren's 71 Barolo, I was ecstatic to find a relatively youthful garnet red tint in this Giacosa. Indeed, in looks and taste, the two nebbiolos seemed at least a generation vs. a mere eight years. Had all the usual suspects of fine nebbiolo aromas and flavors and a long, grand finish. Beautiful.
