  • Transparent tawny.
Aromas of prune, raisin, coffee drops, heather, chocolate fudge, and wet wood. Hint of reservoir water.
Lenient beautiful tannins. Sweet cherry acids and gingery bitterness.
Palate of leather, cardamom, Asian spices, chocolate, cognac, candied orange and wet grass.
(Tasted along with Barolo riserva, Viniculo, Cortese, 1967). A fully mature, tasty and full of tertiary aromas with fading fruit, succulent acidity that holds the wine from collapsing and an almost sweet medicinal finish. Past its prime by far, but still greatly enjoyable. Tasted 2023. The wine is far more superior than the Barolo as it holds character and a fabulous acidity and vital finish.

  • First of three bottles purchased at auction without knpwing the vintage.
Luckily, the vintage is clearly marked on cork as hardly any of the label remained.
Not decanted as we were not familiar with this wine.
The hue was quite nice given the age of the wine; more like that of a 20-30 year old Bordeaux wine.
High shoulder fill level and a cork in decent condition; a little dry. No evidence of TCA.
Given the reputation of both the vintage and the estate I expected more.
This wine was not very generous both in terms of aromatics and in terms of texture. Quite lean with noticeable acidity, rough tannins and more of a pencil shaving character.
The other two bottles had fill levels into the neck, so maybe they will show a little more.

  • Chateau Pavie vertical 1959 to 2006 (Institute of Directors, London): A bit of wax polich V/A on the nose, some iodine, still vigorous, liked it
