  • Well kept conditions. Fully resolved, mellow, red fruited, mushroom, earth, just a pleasure to sip on.

  • Opened this 40 year old for my 40th birthday party. Had it reached it’s peak? Probably. My pallet is not sophisticated enough to necessarily state. But as with so many things, it’s the journey or the experience... and it tied and supported the night like mellow but buttresses.
Decanted about an hour(unfiltered):Not unpleasant, but interesting, the slightly acidic apples which mellowed after another hour or so.

  • Initially, this felt quite youthful, showing quite lively fruits - blackcurrants, dusty red cherries, earth, and oak. Strawberries started showing after a while. Melting tannins. Tertiary notes evident. An elegant wine. Unfortunately, the finish was a tad short. My friend who was blind tasted thought it was a new world blend, 7-10 years. My wife didn't really like it. Having drunk Pavie many times, to me, this was quite distinctly a Pavie, albeit not the best representation of it. The fruits faded dramatically after an hour or two, with tobacco, ashtray, smoke, and earthy soil dominating the nose and palate. Hints of capsicum and greed/dried herbs also started appearing. This wine is past its prime, so drink up! The 1983 that I tasted recently was way better.

  • Much past it's prime...got a bit better with 4 hours of decanting but still a bit dissapointing.

  • Two bottles remain from the original twelve purchased in 1983. Consumption has been sporadic. Notes indicate a decent wine but nothing exceptional. In 1995, it was thought to exceed the 1979, though recent experience with the latter suggests a dramatic reversal has occurred. My experience suggests that 1981 was not noteworthy across the board. How times have changed: back then it was mediocrity interspersed with occasional greatness; nowadays we stagger from one almighty vintage to the next it seems, prices exhibiting concomitant escalation .
