Well I'd love to be able to comment on this one, however, sadly we just moved house and our removalist dropped the bottle. The cork smellt nice though... :(
Old Grange and some other goodies (Ristorante Morini): Takeaway here is that there are no bad years of Grange. I think this was meant to be a less positive year and coming on the heels of the '76 I can tell it's a different type of wine. And yet it's still 100% absolutely delicious. Here again the fruits are becoming a bit sweeter (similar to the 76). Not the same heft as that wine. The eucalyptus comes across a bit more like menthol or mint flavors. It's very well balanced and constantly evolving. And again still young which is just crazy. Beautiful wine.

SLDS Single Bottle Dinner: Blind. Cliniced in 1994. Char, blackberry, cedar and cherry. Good full profile, with sweet fruit that gives the palate some richness even with the resolving structure. Good length to it. Suspect this bottle was showing this wine at its best.

Dinner at Patrick's place (Patrick and Tanya's place): Decanted and poured immediately. Served blind. This bottle had been cliniced in 1998. Bricking colour. Tertiary aromas - old leather, earthy, cloves. The palate is a disappointment. Seems faded and beyond its use by date. No fruit to speak of, some vegetal characters, weak finish. It was a surprise when the label was revealed. 1972 is thought to be a good vintage, but maybe the best years are behind it. 90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Seemed shot upon opening but rapidly improved. Brown red in colour with a nose of old red fruits, spicy green tinges and daggy old wood. Core of fruit is surprisingly good with decent depth and some tingly astringency. Almost fruit if you look hard. Drinking well but drink now. And would have been better 7 yrs ago.
